I really enjoyed the spindly tree poking through the fuller turned trees.

On the scenic way back home, we came along this house. Part of the joy in taking photos of dilapidated houses is that you know there has to be story behind it. What created this intense backwards bend on the house? Was it intentional? Did they have to put shims on the legs of all the tables?

Salt Works

The Salt Works is an institution in Wilmington. It's been around nearly 20 years and continues to have regular patrons as well as new guests who hear of the inexpensive faire. This shot was taken around 6:30pm when the sun was behind the trees and you could get even lighting while keeping the shutter open long enough as to not freeze a car in front of the building. Traffic on that portion of Oleander is too busy to shoot the restaurant in any other way. Enjoy the photo, I'm very happy with it.

We were really busy driving around to spots, setting up and getting photos like we haven't done in quite a while.

Here's Zach McCall under the bridge. It's a sick spot and since they have put in a nice drop in, it's even better.

Andrew had an idea to melon the gap, he ollied it first try and after sweeping up all the debris, we snapped this gem.

The other day you saw the still of the wallie no comply. It took me a minute to figure out how that trick would look best, the birds eye view works well because the shadow really shows how much the no comply boosted Zach off the barrier.

Speaking of wallies, Large wanted to wallie this metal piece on the dock. Considering it had little run up and a considerable drop, the land was well worth the sequence.

And this actually was the first sequence of the day, blunt to fake at the DrStylz spot. Andrew almost got himself a hottie the group of ladies that walked by. Just ask him.

Myrtle Attractions

I went down to Myrtle Beach to visit with family. While I was there I saw my next reason to go down their. Pirate dinner theatre. As long as they have something other than parrot on a shoulder for an entree, I'm in.

And then I found this gem. It's weird. I can't say I would want to build something incorrectly, but that's why I didn't build it. Wonderworks.

Before we got onto the ferry, I found this great patch of wildflowers. We had a good 45 minutes so the camera didn't stay in my bag the whole time.

Moriah decided to check them out. I think the term is frolic. Flowers, climbing trees, anticipation of the boat ride to come.

Then once we were on the boat all I wanted to do was find some pigs so these birds would become more active.

Back in Southport

It's been a while since I have posted anything. Between a wedding, skate competition photos and two product shoots, I've been a bit busy. But yesterday I was able to take my cameras with me on a ride to Southport and back via the Ferry. I got some great shots back in Southport. Hope you enjoy.

Who won 1888's Battle of the Shop

Endless Grind. They've got a great backstory you already know, or could google. But the thing about Endless is that everyone on the team is not only a top notch skater worth spending time with in a session, at a taco bar or just chilling with. At the first Battle of the Shop competition at 1888 there were teams from shops all around the Carolina area. Endless Grind, Doublewide, Momentum, Aussie Island, Another, Sidearm and Fusion fell into the mix.
A six stair, euro gap, boxes and trannies were set up in a very acceptable fashion throughout the once derelict church. The best piece at the park though, is the ancient piano. Almost thrown out during the initial restoration of the church, I was able to talk Hunter and the team at work in the church into holding onto it and using it as an authentic piece of the history within the walls that could be used for a great session.
You could start from atop the stairs, drop down or go over the rail, make your way to the quarter and from there, you've got options. The fact is though; that while everyone was pulling something off on the stairs, the rail over the quarter and the box, the piano seemed to get the most deliberate attention, and I doubt anyone on board missed out on a chance to put their metal on top of the piano.
Standouts at the competition, obviously go to Endless-they won. That's why they got the trophy. And even Sturgil, who recently took the master and commander position over Endless' strong armed ship, had to point at the Greg Britt was the standout overall. He's got a plethora of grinds, flip tricks and airs at his disposal. He can live on a board like a fish in water. But I think everyone's jaws dropped the two times he ollied (no clipping-no wallie) up the 6stair stage. It's over waist high, and not something anyone else had considered.
We're looking at the first Battle of the Shops at 1888. It was a good ride, an awesome chance to see some old friends and have my jaw extended by some serious talent on the 7ply maple.

I finally got a chance to check out the BAC and the 1888 Skatepark. Zach was running the park, Coley banged out this kickflip front nose on the handrail at the park. There's going to be a lot going on at the park with Old Crow Medicine Show and Battle of the Shops too.

This is a spot Andrew pointed out months back but we had just never gotten around to shooting here. It's a downhill bomb to gap. And the gap to the manhole itself is descent but when you factor in the manhole and the gap after the manhole, it's a big gap.

Introducing Xavier

Xavier is the newest rider on the Momentum Team.

Yesterday was actually my first day meeting him and the windiest day I think I have ever shot skate photos. If I was crouched down, the wind would almost push me back or forth. So if the wind wasn't on your side, you really had to compensate a great deal to land where you needed to.

Case in point is this trailer bed site. His ollie is going into the wind, making it harder to pop as far and even harder if you are popping into the air. This was literally, second try. Bigger things will happen here soon, wind allowing.

Everyone skates at this barrier, but I can't say I know many people with the pop to clear this barrier. Here it is though, room to spare.

And just because he had it in the bag, we decided to try a different angle. Super artsy. It doesn't quite do the height of the barrier justice, but you can definitely see from the shadow Xavier casts, he had plenty of room to spare.

Tomorrow you get a couple sequences of this spot, we just had too much fun here.

Kangaroo Bank

On the way out of Myrtle Beach Trent had an urge to pull a stall of the smith variety on this curb bank curb set up (pictured above ironically enough). It was a fun little session including the loss of one flash trigger, someone who will probably be angry about their car and not know that it is Madison's fault and on top Trent's banger, Andrew got a sweet nose pick to bank, maybe we will catch that one in the wild soon.

We made it down to Myrtle Beach on a whim, and had a great time. We skated Stability to get warm and then found an abandoned golf course you can look forward to seeing at n undisclosed time. Anyway, this spot is on the strip, not a side road, the strip. A landmark in the photo should give it away, but it's a spot I've driven by at least 3 or 4 dozen times and have never noticed it. Trent had to hit it, and everyone walking by had to stop and watch him roll away from this. I'll take chocolate sauce on that.

The actual use of the word fun in this since is not so, usually I'm the one dialed in and ready to go. In this case we are talking nose bonks.

I like nose bonks, they are like tweaked ollies and fast plants and hippy jumps. Sweet but rarely do you see people going "hey, watch this sweet nose bonk," it's always, "I've got a nice tre flip to bank that I want to get a shot of."
But have you ever tried to catch a nose bonk over a ledge or trash can, it's frustratingly hard. In the end we through out the idea of me catching it with a still and Big Mike was cool enough to let me go grab the 300 for a sequence, here's the frame that matters, sequence of this just wasn't what either of us were after. All in all, this spot was a surprise, and after it we took a drive all the way through Sampson County, found some sweet spots and hit up Fayetteville to skate an old drainage ditch that I'm not going to uncover for anyone.

So we headed out with strict rules that stated I had to be free for personal concerns by 8:30. The last time the shutter closed was around 8:48 though.

I got a few keepers out of the early morning run out to WB. Mercers isn't particular a place I love to shoot. I think I was just itching for some long exposures and making light do what I wanted it to do. It was actually so dark I had to manually focus in on the pier. I know it looks like day time, but Mercer's shuts the lights off when the sun comes up.

Today we got back into Eastern. It's just too cold to want to sit around on the ground while the things we do happens. I love it because it's just well put together and I usually even get out on the sled for a little while.

You may or may not have heard of Manhattan Cafe, located near the intersection of Shipyard and 17th, but either way, your going to hear about them now. Great place to eat, lots of options and a great staff.

I'm currently working on their menu which will definitely be taking up some of my time. Here's to their staple, bagels... but that's not even the tip of the iceberg.

A healthy platter of bacon, eggs and pancakes served with butter and maple syrup.

And when lunch rolls around, how about a hot dog combo...

Or, a juicy cheeseburger with all the fixins (a little southern dialect)

My home is Fayetteville, NC. It's a great place to stop for a skate trip (exactly what I will be doing with the Momentum Skate Team tomorrow). And there are some nice places to grab some photos.

The Market House has a... unique history but it's a part of my hometown. It's a great skatespot and it's a great subject especially when it's background is the sun peeking through freshly emptied rain clouds.

I honestly can't choose which of these shots I like more. They both have there qualities. So I'm sharing both.

Big Mike's Old School Pole Jam to Gap

Big Mike is one of the really unique rippers in the Hampstead and Wilmington area. He's also super righteous about keeping a good vibe and never seems to get bummed out.

So he took me to this sick spot inside an old school. We sessioned this auditorium; the stage to the audience floor made a descent gap but that isn't enough for a guy like Mike. He adds the pole jam just because he can.
There are four lights in this set up, it's indoors and shot with my fisheye. Because it was shot in the old school, I had to cross process the frame so it would look retro'd out.

When Trent called me to tell me he had this ollie to dock float in mind, I was really confused. I mean, ollie off of the downtown river walk and -- into the river, well onto the river. There's really only enough room on this float to land put on the brakes. Otherwise, you or your board fall into the murky alligator filled Cape Fear River. Of course, I wouldn't be flaunting these shots if it wasn't official. Ollie to wet, landed.

I think this shot is one of my favorite shots with little shops in it. The closeness of the shops, overhangs and old signs create this homage to Venice Beach while still being on the East Coast.

Here's a landscape shot from downtown.

And this gem is a drop in by Trent Reed. This was a fast drop in. I literally had to activate the shutter as he was leaning forward and when the mirror slid back into place he was rolling away. Fast! And pretty impressive!

Spending time with my Momma

My mother gave me my first camera. She has always been behind me in everything I do.

We spent the day together and I took a few hdr shots today.

Wrightsville Beach is dredging right now. These pipes looked cool with my fisheye!

And my mom loved the Arboretum. Here's the kids tea party house. It was a tight fit for me but a great chance to work on my hdr stuff!

I've been really digging StuckinCustoms.com and Trey Ratcliffe's HDR style. I studied up on it. Here's to a 7 bracketed exposures I ran through his process and added a couple of my own tricks to.

Reverse Macro Coupler

Yup, got a reverse macro coupler in today. Makes shooting something like a foreign coin a lot more interesting.

It's got amazingly shallow depth of field and you get an extremely close feel from what you are shooting.

I'm sure I'll have more up. And if you think it's just the bees knees you should go pick one up for yourself!
